I have still a couple more posts coming up about my Australian trip. I hope they are an interesting read!
After Brisbane, we flew to Tristan's hometown Rockhampton where we spent the remaining 2 weeks of our holiday. Rockhampton is a small city in Queensland with a population of around 62,000 people. Rockhampton experiences over 300 days of sunshine each year, which means it is a good place for tourism and outdoor activities. Known as the "Beef Capital of Australia" there is much more to do than just sit in the pub and eat burgers!
I have made a list of 10 things you can do around Rockhampton.
1. Rockhampton Kershaw Botanical Gardens are a well visited attraction in Rockhampton. The park has many paved walking paths, rest areas, drinking fountains and beautiful scenery with many palms and tropical flowers.
2. Quay Street in Rockhampton is full of beautiful architecture and old buildings. The city centre (main street) is not very big but I think we spent at least an hour there, walking around and taking pictures.
3. The Fitzroy River lies in Queensland, going through Rockhampton. Its catchment covers an area of 142,665 square kilometres, making it the largest river on the eastern coast of Australia.
4. Rockhampton Zoo is located between the Botanic Gardens and Murray Lagoon. Animals and birds include koalas, chimpanzees, saltwater crocodiles, freshwater crocodiles, red kangaroos and the rare cassowary.
5. Rockhampton Botanic Gardens are regarded as among the best in regional Australia. Excellent specimens of palms, cycads and ferns are found throughout the park. Some specimens are over 100 years old - it really does look like a tropical paradise!
6. Mount Archer is 604 metres high. The mountain is accessible by sealed road (Pilbeam Drive) and the view from the top is amazing! Mount Archer lies on Rockhampton's north-eastern outskirts and as it is also a national park it protects bushland remnants in the Berserker Ranges.
7. Cooberrie Park is a wildlife sanctuary with more than 300 animals living and walking around freely. The park is located about 25 minutes from Rockhampton near the coastal town of Yeppoon. You can cuddle a koala, hold a crocodile, snake or lizard, play with birds, interact with playful monkeys and hand feed kangaroos!
8. Yeppoon is just amazing! The water is crystal clear, the beach is clean and it is only a 25 minute drive from Rockhampton.
9. Great Keppel Island is the largest of the eighteen islands in the Keppel Group. Discovered and named by James Cook, Great Keppel Island is part of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. The island is surrounded by 27 kilometres of beaches, as well as extensive coral reefs. The island is known for its fish diversity.
10. Shopping - There is no holiday without local shopping. I found the best place to be Stockland Shopping Centre. I got 2 shirts and a skirt from Temt and the prices are just amazing, I paid $40AUD for 3 things!
There are definitely so many other things to do in Rocky. I can't wait to go back and I am sure it will be great to discover even more fun things to do around Queensland.
